After the Odoo Price Rise: Is Odoo Community Plus Xero a Credible Option in Australia?
With Odoo Custom at A$80 per user from 24 Sep 2026, free Odoo Community plus Xero is credible when Odoo is not your ledger. What you give up, costs and fit.
By Josh Craig, Managing Director, Auboros ·
Yes, for some businesses. Since Odoo raised the Australian Custom plan to A$80.00 per user per month on 24 September 2026, running free Odoo Community for operations with Xero for the books is a credible option when Odoo does not need to be your accounting system. It fails when you need the Australian accounting localisation, Odoo Online hosting or Odoo Studio, all of which sit in Enterprise.
At a glance
- Who it is for: Australian businesses on, or quoted for, Odoo Enterprise who are reconsidering the licence after the 24 September 2026 changes, and whose accountant is already in Xero
- Problem it solves: sets out what Community plus Xero can and cannot replace, what it costs against Enterprise, and the three questions that decide it
- Platforms: Odoo Community (LGPLv3, self-hosted), Odoo Enterprise, Xero
- Typical cost: Odoo Enterprise A$43.00 Standard or A$80.00 Custom per user per month at list, yearly billing, ex GST (odoo.com/pricing, Australian pricelist as at 5 October 2026); Xero Grow A$78, Comprehensive A$107 or Ultimate 10 A$143 per month per organisation including GST, no per-user fee (Xero pricing, as at 5 October 2026); Community licence A$0 plus hosting and maintenance
- Typical timeline: moving an Enterprise database to Community is a project of weeks, not days, because Enterprise-only data has to be exported or rebuilt
- Last verified: 5 October 2026 (Odoo editions comparison, Odoo 20 Enterprise Subscription Agreement)
The question has come up in almost every Odoo conversation we have had since Odoo Experience. The Custom plan rose about 23% in Australia, Odoo 20 light users turned employee records into billable users, and a renewal letter that was A$65.00 a seat is heading towards A$80.00 over the next few years. Some businesses are also asking whether Odoo 20’s Australian payroll meets their compliance needs; that is a separate question we are not answering here, and if payroll is your reason for looking, get it answered first. The licence question stands on its own, and it has a real answer: Community plus Xero is neither a loophole nor a downgrade. It is a different architecture, and it suits a particular kind of business.
What do you give up when you leave Odoo Enterprise?
Odoo Community is the open source core, released under the LGPLv3 licence with no per-user fee. It includes CRM, sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, project, basic invoicing, website and eCommerce. That is most of the operational platform. Odoo’s editions comparison lists what Enterprise adds, and for an Australian business four items on that list matter most.
- Full accounting with the Australian localisation. Bank synchronisation, reconciliation, the BAS (Business Activity Statement) report and the GST mapping that produces it live in Enterprise. Community has invoicing and payments, not a general ledger you would run a BAS from.
- Odoo Online and Odoo.sh hosting. Community is self-hosted. You or a partner run the server, backups, patches and upgrades, and Odoo’s upgrade service does not cover Community databases.
- Odoo Studio and the Enterprise-only apps. No-code customisation, helpdesk, quality, field service, planning, marketing automation and the mobile apps that come with them.
- Support and the agreement. No Odoo SA support desk, and none of the subscription terms, which cuts both ways: no 7% renewal clause, and no light user rules either.
Two things that are not on the list: the source code and the data. Enterprise subscribers already have the Enterprise source, and your records are in PostgreSQL either way. Moving between editions is a migration, not a rebuild, though Enterprise-only data (accounting entries, Studio customisations, helpdesk tickets) has to be exported or recreated.
What does Xero add back?
Xero gives you the Australian accounting layer Community lacks, priced per organisation rather than per user. On 5 October 2026 Xero’s Australian plans are Grow at A$78, Comprehensive at A$107 and Ultimate 10 at A$143 per month including GST, each with bank feeds, GST tracking, BAS lodgement and no per-user licence fee. Your accountant is probably already in it, which is the practical reason this pairing comes up more than any other.
The connection is the part to be clear-eyed about. Third-party Odoo to Xero connectors on the Odoo Apps store sync customer invoices and vendor bills from Odoo to Xero, contacts in both directions, and payments back from Xero to reconcile. They do not sync live inventory levels, project costing or bank feeds, and the connector itself is a piece of software someone has to maintain through every Odoo and Xero release. Our post on running Odoo and Xero at the same time covers what the sync does and does not do, and Odoo integration services is where we build and maintain them.
How much does Community plus Xero save against Enterprise?
Here is a 15-user business, per month, with Odoo licence prices ex GST at the Australian list rates as at 5 October 2026 and Xero’s price shown as published, including GST. Hosting figures are our own experience of a small self-hosted Community site in an Australian cloud region, not a quote.
| Row | Odoo Enterprise, Custom plan | Odoo Community plus Xero |
|---|---|---|
| Licence model | Per user per month: 15 at A$80.00 = A$1,200 at list (A$960 in the first year at A$64.00) | Community A$0; Xero Comprehensive A$107 per organisation including GST |
| AU/NZ localisation (STP, BAS, GST) | Australian accounting localisation, BAS report and bank sync in the Enterprise subscription | GST, BAS and bank feeds in Xero; Odoo holds operational data only |
| Hosting options | Odoo Online included; Odoo.sh or on-premise with Custom | Self-hosted; a small site typically runs at a few hundred dollars a month in hosting and patching, in our experience |
| Customisation path | Odoo Studio plus developer modules | Developer modules only; no Studio |
| Ecosystem and integrations | Odoo Apps store, external API on Custom | Odoo Apps store plus a maintained Odoo to Xero connector; Xero’s own app marketplace |
| Typical implementation cost | A$25,000 to A$120,000 or more for most SMEs (Odoo implementation cost in Australia) | Similar for the Odoo side; add connector setup and the Xero mapping |
| Typical go-live | 2 to 8 months by scope | The same, plus the integration testing cycle |
| Best fit | Odoo is the accounting system; you want hosting handled; you use Studio or Enterprise-only apps; you run several entities | Operations-first businesses whose accountant lives in Xero and whose finance need is a clean set of books, not an ERP ledger |
| Watch-outs | The 24 September Custom price, the 7% renewal clause, light user and employee record counting under the Odoo 20 agreement | Two systems to reconcile, a connector to maintain, no Odoo support desk, upgrades are a technical project |
The licence saving is real: roughly A$1,100 a month at list on this example before hosting. What it buys is a second system, a connector and a hosting responsibility. For a 15-user wholesaler with a bookkeeper in Xero and no need for Studio, that trade often works. For a business that wanted Odoo precisely so that finance and operations sat in one place, it undoes the reason they chose Odoo. When MYOB surveyed Australian mid-sized businesses, 48% named operational efficiency as the main reason for changing ERP, and splitting the ledger from the operation is the opposite of that for most of them.
Which businesses should stay on Enterprise?
- Odoo is your general ledger. If month-end, BAS and the auditor all run out of Odoo Accounting today, moving the ledger to Xero is a finance system migration dressed up as a licence saving.
- You run more than one entity in Odoo. Multi-company accounting and consolidation are Enterprise features. On Community plus Xero you would run one Xero organisation per entity and lose the consolidated view.
- You use Studio, Helpdesk, Field Service, Planning or Quality. Each is Enterprise-only, and each would need a developer-built replacement on Community.
- You want hosting handled. Odoo Online is included in the subscription. A business without technical capability in-house or on retainer should not take on a self-hosted server to save a licence fee.
- The light user helps you. If a large share of your seats are warehouse, field or shop-floor staff, the A$12.90 light user may cut your Enterprise bill rather than raise it. Run the audit in our employee record post before deciding anything.
“Community plus Xero is a good answer to a specific question: do we need Odoo to be the accounting system? If the honest answer is no, the saving is real and we will set it up. If the answer is yes, the price rise is annoying but it is not a reason to split your books from your operation.”

How do you decide, and how do you move if you do?
Three questions settle it. Does Odoo need to be your ledger, now or in three years? Who will host and upgrade a Community database, and have you priced that properly? And does the Odoo 20 light user make Enterprise cheaper for you rather than dearer? If the answers are no, a named person or partner, and no, Community plus Xero is on the table.
Moving is a planned cut-over, not a toggle. Accounting entries are closed off in Odoo and opened in Xero at a period end, Enterprise-only customisations are rebuilt or dropped, the connector is configured and tested on real invoices, and the Community database is hosted and backed up before anyone logs in. We support both editions through Odoo Community support and development, and the Odoo Community vs Enterprise post covers the edition decision in more depth. If what you actually want is to leave Odoo altogether, Odoo vs MYOB Acumatica is the comparison we would start with.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can I run Odoo Community with Xero for accounting in Australia?
Yes. Odoo Community handles CRM, sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing and projects, and a third-party connector pushes invoices and bills to Xero, where GST, BAS and bank feeds live. It works when Odoo does not need to be your general ledger and someone maintains the connector.
How much cheaper is Odoo Community plus Xero than Odoo Enterprise?
On licences, a 15-user business pays about A$1,200 a month ex GST on the Custom plan at the Australian list price as at 5 October 2026, against A$0 for Community plus a Xero plan of A$78 to A$143 a month including GST. Hosting, a connector and upgrade work on the Community side reduce the gap.
What do I lose by moving from Odoo Enterprise to Community?
The Australian accounting localisation and BAS reporting, Odoo Online and Odoo.sh hosting, Odoo Studio, Enterprise-only apps such as Helpdesk, Field Service, Planning and Quality, multi-company accounting, Odoo's upgrade service and the support desk. The source code and your data are not lost.
Does the Odoo 20 light user make staying on Enterprise cheaper?
For businesses with many warehouse, field or shop-floor staff on full seats, moving them to A$12.90 light users can cut the Enterprise bill below what it was before the price rise. For office-only teams, or businesses with large unlinked employee lists, it does not. Run the count before you decide.
Is moving from Enterprise to Community a simple downgrade?
No. It is a planned migration: accounting is closed in Odoo and opened in Xero at a period end, Enterprise-only customisations are rebuilt or dropped, the connector is tested on real invoices, and the Community database is hosted and backed up first. Allow weeks, not days.
