Odoo Community: yes, we support it
Ask most Odoo partners about the Community edition and watch the conversation get steered to Enterprise before the second coffee. We do it differently. Community is real Odoo, it runs real Australian businesses, and we implement it, build on it and support it, including installs we had nothing to do with. We will also tell you plainly when Enterprise earns its licence fee, because that honesty is the whole point of working with us.
What Odoo Community is, and what it isn't
Odoo Community is the free, open source edition of Odoo, licensed under LGPL and hosted on infrastructure you control. It includes serious core apps: CRM, sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, invoicing, projects, website and ecommerce. What it does not include is the Enterprise layer: the full accounting workflow, Studio, payroll, field service, helpdesk, marketing automation, the hosted platforms and the official upgrade service. Anyone selling you Community without explaining that list is setting up next year's disappointment.
What we do on Community
Implementation with the same fixed-scope discipline as our published packages. Bespoke module development where your workflow genuinely needs it. Hosting setup on your own cloud or server, done properly with backups and monitoring rather than a weekend DigitalOcean special. Support retainers for Community sites, including ones we didn't build, which start with an audit so we know what we're standing behind. And code review for businesses with in-house developers who want a second set of eyes from a certified Odoo Silver Partner team.
Bespoke development without the maintenance trap
Custom work on Community is where good businesses get hurt, because every custom module is a debt that falls due at upgrade time. Our rules: check the OCA first, because the Odoo Community Association maintains well-tested open source modules that beat bespoke code for many common needs; build custom only where your process is genuinely different; and everything we write is version-controlled, documented and built with the next upgrade in mind. Less code, better code, is the cheapest thing we will ever tell you.
When Community is the right call
A capable technical team or partner relationship, an operations-led scope (inventory, CRM, manufacturing, projects) rather than an accounting-led one, a real requirement to self-host and control your stack, and budget discipline that values a free licence. Plenty of Australian businesses fit that description, and for them Community is not the compromise option, it is the correct one.
When Enterprise pays for itself
Three things usually decide it. If your BAS workflow and full accounting live inside Odoo, Enterprise's accounting is worth it for most Australian businesses. If you have no appetite for managing upgrades, Enterprise's upgrade service (free for all Enterprise subscribers) removes a real recurring project that Community owners carry themselves. And Studio, payroll, field service or the hosted platforms are simply not on the Community menu. Moving from Community to Enterprise later is a standard, supported path that keeps your data, so starting on Community is not a one-way door.
Community upgrades and rescues
Community has no official upgrade service, so version upgrades are project work: migration scripts, custom module rework and proper staging tests. We scope them honestly through our upgrade practice. And if a DIY or outsourced Community build has gone sideways, that is exactly what our ERP rescue service exists for: no blame, an audit, and three costed ways forward.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Odoo Community really free?
The licence is free and the code is open source under LGPL. The real costs are hosting, implementation, any custom development and ongoing maintenance, which is why a free licence does not mean a free system. We will give you the honest all-in picture before you commit.
Do you support Odoo Community sites you didn't build?
Yes, regularly. Support starts with an audit of the configuration, custom code and hosting so we know what we are taking on, and you get that documentation whether or not you stay with us.
Can we move from Community to Enterprise later?
Yes. It is a standard path that keeps your data and configuration, and it is often the right sequence: prove the system on Community, then add Enterprise when accounting, payroll or the upgrade service justify it.
Does Odoo Community handle Australian accounting and BAS?
Community includes invoicing and the Australian chart of accounts, but the full accounting workflow sits in Enterprise. Accounting-led Australian businesses usually land on Enterprise for that reason, and payroll is scoped separately in either case.
Running or considering Odoo Community?
We support Community properly from Brisbane: implementation, bespoke modules, retainers and rescues, plus a straight answer on whether Enterprise would pay for itself in your case.
