Odoo vs MYOB Acumatica: which one fits your business?

Almost every comparison of these two platforms is written by a partner who sells exactly one of them. We implement both, which means we make the same money either way, and it means this page can say things single-platform partners can't.

The short version: Odoo suits businesses of roughly 5 to 200 users that want one flexible platform across their whole operation, from website and CRM through inventory, manufacturing and accounting, rolled out module by module. MYOB Acumatica suits finance-led mid-market organisations that want enterprise-grade financials with Australian and New Zealand payroll and compliance built in, licensed per named user. Plenty of businesses could run on either; the deciding factors are usually payroll, licensing model and how much you want the system to bend to you.

Where Odoo is the right call

Odoo wins on breadth and flexibility. One platform covers accounting, sales, purchasing, inventory, manufacturing, projects, ecommerce, field service and more, and because the code is open, it can be shaped to fit workflows that off-the-shelf products refuse to handle. You can start with two or three modules and grow. Our published implementation packages start at $25,000 for an Essentials build, which puts real ERP within reach of businesses that assumed it was a $150,000 conversation.

The honest caveat: Odoo's flexibility needs governing. A partner who says yes to every customisation will build you an expensive maintenance problem. That is a partner-quality issue rather than a product issue, but you should go in knowing it.

Where MYOB Acumatica is the right call

MYOB Acumatica wins on financial depth and ANZ compliance. Single Touch Payroll (STP), superannuation and local tax handling are native to the product because MYOB builds specifically for Australia and New Zealand. Distribution, manufacturing and project accounting editions give mid-market operators serious capability without bolt-ons, and the named-user licensing model works well for organisations where a defined finance and operations team uses the system deeply.

The honest caveat: the global Acumatica release typically lands features 6 to 9 months before the MYOB ANZ version, so "current Acumatica release" and "current MYOB Acumatica release" are usually different things. And the third-party app ecosystem is smaller than Odoo's, so unusual requirements more often mean customisation within the platform.

Head to head where it matters

  • Financials: both are genuine double-entry ERPs. MYOB Acumatica has the deeper mid-market finance feature set; Odoo covers what most SMEs need with less ceremony.
  • Payroll: MYOB Acumatica handles ANZ payroll natively. With Odoo we scope payroll separately, and sometimes the right answer is a connected dedicated payroll product.
  • Inventory and distribution: both are strong. MYOB Acumatica's Distribution Edition is purpose-built; Odoo pairs inventory with purchasing, barcoding and its webshop in one system.
  • Manufacturing: both handle BOMs, work orders and MRP. The right choice depends on your production modes; our manufacturing page goes deeper.
  • Ecommerce: Odoo includes a native webshop; MYOB Acumatica integrates with external platforms. If the webshop is core to the business, this often decides it.
  • Customisation: Odoo is open source with published packages of custom work; MYOB Acumatica customisation happens within the platform's framework.
  • Licensing: Odoo prices per user with public pricing; MYOB licenses per named user, quoted directly. Our MYOB Acumatica pricing guide explains how the quoting works.

What they cost

Implementation effort is similar for similar scope: discovery, configuration, data migration, training, go-live. For Odoo we publish fixed packages. For MYOB Acumatica, licensing is quoted per named user by MYOB, and eligible wholesale distributors can take the fixed-scope FastStart program with a 12 week go-live. In both cases you should know your all-in number before signing anything.

How we help you choose

Discovery first: we map how your business actually operates, then recommend a platform, and we put the reasoning in writing so you can challenge it. Because we implement both, the recommendation is about fit, and occasionally the honest answer is that neither is justified yet and your current setup has another year in it. That answer costs us a sale and earns us the next three referrals, so we keep giving it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Odoo cheaper than MYOB Acumatica?

Usually, at the licence line, especially for smaller teams. Total cost depends on scope: a heavily customised Odoo build can cost more than a well-scoped Acumatica one. Compare all-in numbers for your actual scope, not licence prices.

We're on MYOB AccountRight. Which one should we move to?

MYOB Acumatica is the natural upgrade path within the MYOB family, but it is not automatic. Our AccountRight comparison and migration page cover how to decide.

Which is better for wholesale distribution?

Both are credible. MYOB Acumatica has a purpose-built Distribution Edition and the FastStart program; Odoo bundles inventory, purchasing and ecommerce in one platform. Our wholesale distribution page walks through the decision.

Do you really not have a preference?

We have a preference per business, not per platform. Roughly half our implementations are on each. The moment a partner's recommendation is the same for every client, you are hearing their margin, not your fit.

Want the recommendation for your business?

We are one of the few Australian partners implementing both platforms from one Brisbane team, and we will tell you which fits and why, in writing.
