MYOB Inventory Management in Australia: Where MYOB Business and AccountRight Stop, and What MYOB Acumatica Adds
MYOB inventory management at three levels: MYOB Business sells from stock only, AccountRight adds built items, MYOB Acumatica adds FIFO, lots and scanning.

MYOB sells inventory management at three levels. MYOB Business tracks stock on hand for simple retail, AccountRight adds built items, multiple locations and price levels, and MYOB Acumatica adds four valuation methods, lot and serial tracking, barcode warehouse operations and replenishment. As at 5 October 2026, MYOB’s own guidance is that MYOB Business suits businesses that sell from stock and never backorder.

Most people who search for MYOB inventory management already use MYOB for accounting and want to know whether the stock side will hold up. The answer depends on which MYOB you mean. MYOB Business, AccountRight and MYOB Acumatica are three different products with three different inventory engines, and MYOB’s own support pages are clear about where the first two stop. This post lays out the three levels, the signs you have outgrown one, and what the move up to MYOB Acumatica looks like for an Australian business.
What inventory management does MYOB Business actually include?
MYOB’s support page on MYOB Business inventory describes it as ideal for retail businesses with simple needs, meaning those that sell from stock on hand and do not backorder to fulfil sales. You can create and import items, set reorder information, buy and sell items, add items from a supplier bill, adjust quantities, and run stock on hand, item sales and reorder reports.
What it does not do is the list MYOB gives for AccountRight: build items from other items, store stock at multiple locations, set tiered price levels, or add items to inventory without a supplier bill. MYOB’s comparison of inventory in MYOB Business and AccountRight uses a hamper business as the example of who should not be on MYOB Business: many components from many suppliers, packaged in house, with backorders around Christmas.
If you run AccountRight in a browser, note that MYOB says the browser version carries the simpler MYOB Business feature set. Multiple locations, built items and custom price levels still live in the AccountRight desktop app, and a sale entered in the browser can only check stock at the primary location.
When has a business outgrown MYOB Business or AccountRight inventory?
The honest test is not the size of the business. It is whether stock questions are being answered outside the system. We see the same five signs across Queensland wholesalers and manufacturers:
- Backorders live in a spreadsheet. MYOB Business cannot fulfil from backorder, so someone keeps a list of what customers are waiting for and chases it by hand.
- Costing is a guess. AccountRight tracks an average cost per item. If you need FIFO for margin reporting, or standard cost for a manufactured product, the number on the report is not the number you want.
- Stock lives in more than one place. A second warehouse, a van, a 3PL or consignment stock at a customer’s site all need their own on-hand figures. AccountRight desktop handles multiple locations; MYOB Business does not.
- Traceability is a compliance requirement. Food, chemicals, medical devices and anything with a batch or serial number need lot tracking with expiry dates. Neither MYOB Business nor AccountRight is built for it.
- Picking is done from a printed invoice. No scanning on receipt, pick or pack means every count is a stocktake and every error is found by the customer.
Two or more of those and you are running inventory in people’s heads. MYOB’s 2025 mid-market survey found that 36% of Australian mid-sized businesses were looking to upgrade or improve their ERP system, and 48% named operational efficiency as the main driver. Inventory is usually where that inefficiency sits.
What does MYOB Acumatica add for inventory?
MYOB Acumatica is MYOB’s mid-market ERP, the product that was called MYOB Advanced until the 2024 rebrand. Its inventory module is a different category of tool from the small business products. Four things stand out for Australian product businesses.
Valuation methods
MYOB Acumatica’s item costs and valuation methods documentation covers four methods: average, FIFO, standard and specific. The method is set per item class or per item, and it drives both the inventory asset value and the cost of goods sold posting. Specific costing is used for items with lot or serial numbers, so a serialised machine carries its own purchase cost through to the sale. For a distributor coming off an average-cost-only system, FIFO alone can change the margin picture on fast-moving lines.
Warehouses, locations and lot or serial tracking
Each warehouse can hold storage locations, and transfers between warehouses can run as a single step or as a two-step ship and receive, which is what you want when stock spends a day on a truck between Brisbane and Townsville. Lot and serial numbers carry through purchase receipts, sales and physical counts, and MYOB’s inventory and distribution page lists shelf life and expiry on traceable items for perishable stock.
Replenishment and dead stock
The same page describes replenishment settings per item: order quantities, lead times and safety stock, so the system calculates what to reorder rather than waiting for someone to notice. It also surfaces dead stock across all warehouses, which is the number most businesses do not have until the stocktake. If you want to see the maths before you configure it, our reorder point and safety stock calculator runs the same formulas.
Barcode warehouse operations
MYOB Acumatica’s automated warehouse operations run on a barcode scanner or the mobile app once the Warehouse Management feature is enabled. The documented operations are picking and packing per shipment, wave and batch picking, receiving against a purchase receipt and putting away to locations, transfers within a warehouse, and physical counts. The workflow is configurable, so a small team can run pick and pack as one step while a larger warehouse separates pick, pack and ship.

How does an Australian business move from AccountRight to MYOB Acumatica inventory?
This is an implementation, not an upgrade button, and it pays to know that going in. The sequence we run for Queensland distributors looks like this.
Item master first. Every item needs a class, a valuation method, a base unit of measure and, if relevant, lot or serial settings before a single transaction is loaded. This is where businesses coming off AccountRight discover duplicates, dead SKUs and units that were never consistent. Clean it here or you will clean it in production.
Opening stock by location, valued. On-hand quantities are loaded per warehouse and location at the cost the new valuation method needs. If you are moving from average cost to FIFO, the opening layers have to be built deliberately, and your accountant should sign off on the opening inventory value because it has to agree with the balance sheet you are cutting over from. Our MYOB Acumatica implementation timeline post covers where that sits in the project.
Then the warehouse workflow. Scanning only pays if the physical layout matches the system: location barcodes on the racks, a receiving bench that matches the receive-and-put-away flow, and a decision on whether picking is per order, by wave or in batches. Wholesale distributors with a standard flow usually fit the fixed-scope MYOB FastStart for wholesale distribution program, which goes live in 12 weeks. Auboros is an approved Queensland partner for FastStart, and other partners deliver it too.
The item master is the project. If a client comes to us with clean item classes and one unit of measure per product, the inventory module goes in on schedule. If every SKU has three codes and nobody knows which warehouse the number refers to, that is the first month gone before we touch a form.

Is MYOB Acumatica inventory worth it for a smaller business?
Not always, and it is fair to say so. If you sell from stock in one location, never backorder and your margin reporting is fine on average cost, MYOB Business or AccountRight is the cheaper and faster answer, and nothing in this post should push you off it. The case for MYOB Acumatica is specific: more than one place stock sits, more than one costing method needed, traceability that a regulator or a customer audit will ask for, or a warehouse team that should be scanning rather than reading invoices. MYOB’s 2025 ERP trends report put it bluntly: 45% of decision-makers said siloed systems limit growth. The inventory spreadsheet beside the accounting system is the silo most Australian product businesses have.
If you are weighing it up, our MYOB Acumatica partner in Brisbane page covers what an engagement includes, and the MYOB Acumatica vs AccountRight post covers the whole-of-business comparison rather than inventory alone.
