ERP for Building and Plumbing Supplies Wholesalers in Australia: What to Look For

What ERP for building and plumbing supplies wholesalers must cover: trade pricing, supplier price files, the lead-free WaterMark deadline and platform fit.

By Bill Alvarez, Practice Manager, Auboros ·

Building and plumbing supplies wholesale sits in an odd corner of the economy right now. The trade customer base keeps growing, with construction business counts up 3.4% in 2025-26 on the latest ABS figures, while wholesale trade itself grew just 0.5% against 3.1% across the whole economy. More builders and plumbers to serve, barely any new wholesalers to serve them. The sector is consolidating, and the operators winning share are running tighter systems, not bigger sheds.

We covered the general case in our guide to the best ERP for wholesale distribution in Australia. This post is about what trade supplies adds on top, because like electrical wholesaling, the plumbing and building side carries requirements that generic wholesale software treats as afterthoughts.

What ERP for building and plumbing supplies wholesalers has to cover

The requirements list for ERP for building and plumbing supplies wholesalers starts where generic inventory software stops.

  • Supplier price files that never stop moving. The majors reissue price files through the year, sometimes thousands of SKUs at a time. If repricing means a week of manual data entry, you are always selling on stale margins. Bulk price file import and effective-dated pricing belong in the baseline spec.
  • Trade pricing with real structure. Account customers sit on negotiated price levels, contract rates on specific lines, and job-priced quotes, while the counter sells at retail. The system has to hold all of it at once and apply the right price without the salesperson thinking about it.
  • Rebates and supplier terms. Volume rebates decide the real margin on major supplier relationships. If rebate accruals live in a spreadsheet, the true margin on half your range is a guess until the quarter closes.
  • Credit accounts and 30-day terms. Most trade revenue runs through credit accounts, so credit limits, stop-supply rules and statements need to run themselves rather than depend on a bookkeeper chasing them.
  • Branches, site deliveries and backorders. Stock sits across branches, orders deliver to job sites, and long-lead lines run on backorder. Transfers, delivery runs and backorder visibility belong in the same system as the ledger.

The lead-free deadline turned certification into a stock problem

Most plumbing and drainage products intended for installation in Australia must be certified under the WaterMark Certification Scheme, and the scheme has a nuance every wholesaler learns early. Selling a non-certified product is legal, but if the product type appears on the WaterMark schedule, a licensed plumber cannot lawfully install it. The stock you can sell and the stock your customers can use are not the same list.

The lead-free transition has sharpened that into a dated problem. From 1 May 2026, only lead-free copper alloy products can be certified for use in contact with drinking water, with allowable lead content capped at 0.25%, and products certified under the old rules can only continue to be installed until 30 April 2028. Victoria has moved ahead of the national timetable. So every plumbing wholesaler is currently holding some mix of leaded certified stock with a closing sell-through window and lead-free lines carrying the new Lead Free WaterMark, while their builder customers manage compliance pressures of their own, as we covered in our guide to MYOB Acumatica for construction in Queensland.

That makes it an inventory data question first. The product record needs the WaterMark licence number, the lead-free status and a reference to the listing in the WaterMark product database, so purchasing stops rebuying superseded lines, sales can see sell-through pace on every affected SKU, and nobody discovers a pallet of stranded stock in May 2028.

The wholesalers who will handle the 2028 cutover comfortably are the ones whose system can already answer two questions: how much leaded certified stock do we hold, and how fast is it moving. With certification data on the product record, that is a ten second report. Without it, it is a stocktake with a torch. Bill Alvarez, Practice Manager, Auboros

How Odoo and MYOB Acumatica handle trade supplies

Odoo suits trade wholesalers who want breadth on one platform. Vendor price files load in bulk through the documented pricelist import, customer pricelists carry trade levels and contract rates, barcode scanning runs the warehouse, and the native webshop can double as a trade portal where account customers order at their own prices against live stock. Certification details sit on the product record as attributes your team can filter and report on.

MYOB Acumatica approaches the same problem from the finance side. Its Distribution Edition is purpose-built for stock-led businesses, connecting customer-specific pricing, credit management and multi-branch operations to mid-market financials, and eligible wholesale distributors can take the FastStart program, a fixed-scope implementation with a 12 week go-live that we deliver in Queensland.

To be clear, neither platform ships a WaterMark module. What they provide is a product master and reporting engine strong enough to carry certification data properly, which is more than most trade wholesalers have today. The sector is already looking past the basics anyway: 78% of wholesale distribution businesses plan to use AI in their ERP, and none of that works without clean product data underneath it.

When a dedicated trade package still wins

Trade-specific systems such as Frameworks and Lennox’s LILAC have served this industry for decades, and for some operators they remain the right call. A single-branch counter operation, deep in an established supplier price file ecosystem, with no plans for ecommerce or unusual workflows, gets trade functionality out of the box that a general platform needs configuring to match.

The general platforms win when the business outgrows that shape. Multiple entities or branches with consolidated reporting, a webshop or B2B portal alongside the counter, integrations with couriers and supplier systems, and a platform that keeps investing in new capability each release. That is the real trade-off to price: out-of-the-box depth today against room to grow tomorrow. Start from the shape your business will have in five years rather than this year’s pain point, and the right category usually declares itself.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What ERP do building and plumbing supplies wholesalers use in Australia?

The market splits between dedicated trade packages built around counter sales and supplier price file ecosystems, and general platforms like Odoo and MYOB Acumatica. Single-branch counter operations often stay on trade packages, while wholesalers running multiple branches, webshops or group structures tend to move to a general platform.

What does the lead-free plumbing change mean for wholesalers?

From 1 May 2026, only lead-free copper alloy products can be WaterMark certified for use in contact with drinking water, and stock certified under the old rules can only be installed until 30 April 2028. Wholesalers need to know how much affected stock they hold and how fast it is selling through, which is a product data question for your ERP.

Can Odoo or MYOB Acumatica handle trade counter sales?

Yes. Odoo pairs its Point of Sale and quick order entry with customer credit accounts, and MYOB Acumatica handles counter-style order entry with customer-specific pricing. Dedicated trade packages are still faster at a pure counter workflow, so weigh counter volume against everything else the business needs.

How do wholesalers manage supplier price rises in an ERP?

Load the new price file in bulk with an effective date, review the margin impact before it goes live, and let customer pricing rules reprice automatically. Odoo documents a bulk vendor pricelist import, and MYOB Acumatica's Distribution Edition is built for maintaining supplier and customer pricing at scale. Ask any vendor to demonstrate the workflow on your own price file.
