MYOB Implementation in Sydney: Which MYOB, Which Partner, and What It Takes
MYOB implementation in Sydney explained: MYOB Business setup vs a MYOB Acumatica ERP project, how partners are chosen, what to ask them, and what NSW changes.
By Bill Alvarez, Practice Manager, Auboros ·
Type “MYOB implementation Sydney” into Google and you get two different trades on the same results page. Half the listings are bookkeepers offering MYOB Business setup and training. The other half are ERP consultancies pitching MYOB Acumatica projects. Both call themselves MYOB partners. One job takes a fortnight and a modest invoice. The other runs for months and changes how the whole company works. Before you ring anyone, work out which one you are actually buying.
Which MYOB are you implementing?
MYOB sells two very different product families, and the word “implementation” gets used for both.
- MYOB Business (Lite, Pro, AccountRight). This is small business accounting software. Setting it up is a bookkeeping job: chart of accounts, bank feeds, payroll categories, a few templates and some training. A certified advisor does it in days, with no project manager and no go-live weekend.
- MYOB Acumatica (formerly MYOB Advanced). This is a cloud ERP for mid-sized businesses, sold per named user and implemented by accredited partners. It covers general ledger, multi-entity consolidation, inventory across warehouses, projects, manufacturing, payroll and CRM in one database. Setting it up is a proper project with design, build, testing and training stages.
A quick test. If you have more than one trading entity, stock in more than one location, projects that need work-in-progress tracking, or twenty or more people who need to be in the system at once, you are in Acumatica territory. If you are a single entity with a bookkeeper and a handful of staff, MYOB Business is probably the right answer, and you should be talking to a bookkeeper. We wrote a longer version of that boundary in our guide to outgrowing AccountRight. The rest of this post is about the Acumatica kind of MYOB implementation in Sydney, because that is where most of the confusion and most of the money sits.
How MYOB implementation in Sydney actually works
In most cases MYOB does not run the implementation itself. Its own implementation partner page describes the model plainly: you speak to MYOB, settle on the platform, and MYOB introduces you to a local accredited partner who runs the project. You can also go partner-first and let the partner handle the MYOB conversation. Either way, the partner scopes the work, quotes the licences and delivers the system.
MYOB’s implementation overview lists four stages: design, build, test readiness (data migration, stress testing, training key staff), then go live. Every partner uses some version of that sequence. What differs is how much discovery happens before the quote, how the migration from your old system is handled, and what “go live” includes. Our post on how long a MYOB Acumatica implementation takes walks through each stage with realistic durations.
Two things about the Sydney market are worth knowing. First, several of the largest MYOB partners in the country have their head offices in Sydney, so you have as much choice here as anywhere in Australia. That is good for you, and it also means quotes for the same scope can vary a lot. Second, because the partner is separate from the vendor, you can change partners later without changing software. Your subscription stays with MYOB. If a relationship sours in year two, you are not locked in. We covered how to run that selection in our guide to choosing a MYOB Acumatica partner.
What is different about a NSW project
Most of an ERP implementation is the same in Sydney as it is in Brisbane or Melbourne. A few things are not.
Payroll tax is the obvious one. Revenue NSW applies a 5.45% rate above a $1.2 million annual threshold, and the threshold is apportioned if you also pay wages interstate or belong to a payroll tax group. A Sydney head office with a Brisbane warehouse and a Melbourne sales team gets three different state calculations from one payroll. The system has to know which state each employee’s wages belong to from day one, and grouped entities need to be flagged as grouped. Federal reporting sits on top of that through Single Touch Payroll, which reports to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) every pay run.
Multi-entity structures come up a lot in larger NSW businesses, partly because property, holding and operating companies tend to sit together under one owner. If that is you, the consolidation and intercompany design decides whether month-end takes two days or two weeks. We covered the mechanics in our post on MYOB Acumatica multi-entity accounting.
The economic backdrop matters for scope discipline. The Australian Bureau of Statistics counted a 26,057 net increase in NSW businesses in 2025-26, the largest of any state, while businesses with 20 to 199 employees grew only 0.7% nationally. The NSW Government’s 2026-27 Budget notes three Reserve Bank rate rises since early 2026 and expects growth to slow. Boards are still approving ERP projects, but they are approving tight ones. MYOB’s 2025 Mid-Market Survey found 36% of Australian mid-sized businesses looking to upgrade or improve their ERP, with operational efficiency the top driver at 48%. Efficiency projects with fixed scope get signed off. Open-ended transformations do not.
What to ask a Sydney MYOB partner before you sign
The quotes you receive will not be comparable unless you force them to be. Ask every partner the same questions.
- Quote the licences on my actual user list. MYOB Acumatica is sold per named user in access tiers and quoted through partners. Give each partner the same list of people and what each of them needs to do, and ask for the tier assigned to each. Our MYOB Acumatica cost guide explains why the user mix moves the number more than the headcount does.
- What is fixed scope and what is time and materials? Ask for the list of what is explicitly out of scope. That list tells you more about the partner than the list of what is in.
- Who moves the data, and how much history? Opening balances only, or two years of transactions? From AccountRight, Exo or a spreadsheet? Migration is where most timelines slip.
- Who configures payroll tax, STP and superannuation? If the answer is “your accountant”, find out whether your accountant knows that.
- Which days are on site, and where? Discovery workshops and go-live week usually should be. Configuration and testing usually do not need to be. Get the on-site days written into the proposal.
- What happens after go-live? The first BAS (Business Activity Statement) and the first month-end are where the real questions surface. Our post on what MYOB Acumatica support includes covers what to expect in that window.
- Can I speak to a NSW client of similar size? Not a logo on a website. A phone call with someone who went live in the last year.
Does your partner need a Sydney office?
Sometimes. If your project involves heavy change management across several sites, a warehouse floor that needs hands-on training for forklift drivers and pickers, or executive sponsors who will only engage in a room, a partner with consultants already in Sydney is the sensible choice. We say that as a Brisbane firm.
For finance-led projects on a cloud product, location matters less than it did ten years ago. Configuration, testing and most training happen on screen regardless of where the consultant sits. The parts that benefit from being in the room are discovery at the start and go-live at the end, and those are scheduled trips. We run our NSW projects that way: on site for discovery and go-live, remote for the build, and an hour on a plane when something needs a face.
Every Sydney project we quote, we tell the client up front that we are in Brisbane and what that means in practice. The ones who pick us do it because the scope was clearer and the quote was itemised, and because they liked that we said it before they had to ask. If a client needs someone on site three days a week, we say so and point them elsewhere.

One more option worth knowing about. MYOB runs a fixed-scope program called FastStart for wholesale distribution with a twelve-week go-live. We are one of the approved partners delivering it in Queensland, and other partners deliver it too. If you are a distributor, ask whichever partner you speak to whether a fixed-scope program fits you before you accept a bespoke quote.
The short version
Work out which MYOB you need. If it is Acumatica, remember that MYOB introduces partners and in most cases leaves the delivery to them, and that you can change partners without changing software. Get every quote on the same user list and the same scope. Make the on-site days explicit. Then pick the partner whose out-of-scope list you trust.
Planning a MYOB Acumatica implementation in Sydney or regional NSW?
We are a Brisbane-based MYOB Acumatica partner working with businesses across Queensland and New South Wales, and we will tell you in the first conversation whether a remote-first delivery model suits your project or whether you are better served by a partner down the road. If you want an itemised scope and a named-user quote you can compare against the others on your desk, book a free consultation. Bring your user list and your current chart of accounts, and we will have somewhere useful to start.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How much does a MYOB implementation in Sydney cost?
It depends on which MYOB you mean. Setting up MYOB Business or AccountRight is a bookkeeping engagement that typically runs to a few thousand dollars. A MYOB Acumatica implementation is a partner-delivered ERP project quoted on your named-user list, modules, data migration and integrations, and it is usually a five-figure to six-figure project. Ask every partner to quote the same user list and scope so the numbers are comparable.
Does MYOB implement Acumatica directly or through partners?
In most cases through partners. MYOB's own implementation partner page says that after you settle on the platform with MYOB, it introduces you to a local accredited partner who plans and delivers the project. You can also approach a partner first. Your subscription stays with MYOB, so you can change partners later without changing software.
How long does a MYOB Acumatica implementation take in Sydney?
Fixed-scope programs such as MYOB's FastStart for wholesale distribution target a twelve-week go-live. A bespoke MYOB Acumatica implementation with multiple entities, data migration and integrations typically runs three to six months. Location does not change the duration much; the amount of history you migrate and the number of integrations do.
Do I need a MYOB partner with a Sydney office?
Only for some projects. If you need consultants on site several days a week for change management across multiple locations, a Sydney-based team is the sensible choice. For finance-led cloud projects, discovery and go-live are the parts that benefit from being in the room, and those are scheduled trips. Ask any partner to write the on-site days into the proposal.
