MYOB Acumatica vs Pronto Xi: What the Two Vendor Pages Leave Out

MYOB Acumatica vs Pronto Xi for Australian businesses: who implements each, cloud or on-premise, industry depth, pricing and when we'd point you to Pronto.

By Josh Craig, Managing Director, Auboros ·

Search for MYOB Acumatica vs Pronto Xi and the first two results are written by MYOB and by Pronto. Read them back to back and they contradict each other on nearly every row. MYOB’s comparison page says Pronto’s proprietary code makes customisation costly and its pricing hard to predict. Pronto’s comparison page says Pronto Xi configures to your business without customisation, describes its own licensing as transparent, and calls MYOB Acumatica a comfortable step up from accounting software that relies on add-ons once things get complex.

Both pages are sales pages, and this one is written by a MYOB Acumatica partner, so weigh it accordingly. The difference is that we do not implement Pronto Xi and earn nothing if you choose it, which makes it easier to say plainly when you should. Here is what both pages leave out, and how we’d decide if it were our business.

MYOB Acumatica vs Pronto Xi: an Australian original and an Australian edition

Pronto Software is an Australian developer headquartered in Melbourne that has been building ERP for more than 45 years and counts more than 1,500 Australian and global organisations as customers. Pronto Xi is its own code, top to bottom. The same company writes it, sells it, implements it and supports it. It is modular, it ships built-in business intelligence powered by IBM Cognos Analytics, and it runs across construction, food and beverage, manufacturing, mining, retail, service and wholesale distribution.

MYOB Acumatica is the Australian and New Zealand edition of Acumatica, a US-developed cloud platform. MYOB owns the localisation, the payroll, the GST and Business Activity Statement (BAS) reporting and the Single Touch Payroll (STP) connection, and accredited partners like us do the implementing and most of the supporting. New releases reach Australia roughly six to nine months after the global Acumatica versions because MYOB adapts each one for local compliance first.

That is the real shape of the choice: one Australian company accountable for everything on a platform it controls, against a global platform with a strong local owner and a competitive partner market underneath it. Each suits a different kind of business.

Who implements it, and who you ring in year three

Neither vendor page spends much time on this, and it decides more evaluations than the feature grid does.

Pronto’s model is direct. Its own consultants scope, implement and train, and its own team answers support calls. The upside is one accountable vendor with deep product knowledge and no finger-pointing between a software company and a reseller. The downside is that you get the consultants Pronto assigns, and if the relationship sours you cannot take your licence to a different implementer.

MYOB Acumatica is partner-implemented. You choose the partner, you can compare two or three on approach and price, and if one disappoints you can move your subscription to another accredited partner without changing software. The FastStart program is one example of what a competitive partner market produces: a fixed-scope wholesale distribution implementation with a 12-week go-live. The trade-off is that partner quality varies, and our guide to picking an MYOB Acumatica partner is the checklist we’d use to vet them.

Where Pronto Xi is the better fit

  • You need to run on your own servers or in a private cloud. Pronto offers SaaS, hosted and on-premises deployment and lets the customer choose. MYOB Acumatica is cloud only. A mine site with unreliable connectivity, a business with a firm data-residency policy, or a group with a paid-for server room all have a reason to look at Pronto first.
  • Bricks-and-mortar retail is your core. Pronto Xi has a retail module and an ERP-integrated point-of-sale app built by the same vendor. MYOB Acumatica reaches retail through its eCommerce connector and third-party POS integrations, and has no native till. Multi-store retail with a shared warehouse is Pronto’s home ground.
  • Mining services, heavy assets or field-heavy operations. Pronto lists mining as a dedicated industry and ships asset and facility management as a module. MYOB Acumatica handles asset-intensive service through its field service edition, but Pronto has a long history in Australian mining and engineering and the product shows it.
  • You want one vendor accountable for everything. If a partner sitting between you and the software company bothers you, Pronto removes the layer, and for some boards that is the deciding factor.

Where MYOB Acumatica is the better fit

  • You want to choose your implementer, and be able to change them. A partner market keeps price and service honest in a way a direct model cannot.
  • You are a finance-led group with several entities. Multi-entity, intercompany and consolidated reporting are core to MYOB Acumatica, and the browser-based interface suits finance teams that live in the cloud already. Pronto’s page says its General Ledger handles the same, so treat this as a question of fit. MYOB Acumatica is built for that shape of business first.
  • Modern manufacturing and projects on a current platform. Pronto’s page describes MYOB Acumatica’s manufacturing as reaching a ceiling. Our own look at the Manufacturing Edition’s production modes and MRP suggests the ceiling is higher than that framing implies, though Pronto is deeper for process manufacturing and complex engineering projects. Take a demo on your own bill of materials before you believe either vendor.
  • You need a broad integration marketplace and low-code tools. MYOB claims 170 or more third-party integrations plus an open API, and its low-code customisation tools are the kind an internal power user can learn. Pronto integrates through its own API platform and a smaller partner ecosystem.
  • You have a New Zealand entity. MYOB’s page says Pronto Xi does not natively support Inland Revenue requirements and leans on partners for New Zealand compliance, while Pronto’s own page lists Australian compliance only. If NZ payroll or GST is in scope, put that question to Pronto directly before you shortlist.

Pricing: two quotes and no price lists

Neither vendor publishes a price list, so anyone who tells you one is cheaper than the other before scoping is guessing. MYOB sells Acumatica per named user in access tiers and quotes through partners, which is why our MYOB Acumatica cost guide works in indicative ranges. Pronto sells Pronto Xi as a modular product, describes its support as bundled with no tiers, and the cost shape changes again depending on whether you take it as SaaS, hosted or on your own hardware.

The only fair comparison is two scoped quotes on the same user list and the same module list, taken out to five years, with hosting, support and upgrade costs in both columns. When MYOB surveyed Australian mid-sized businesses, 36% said they were looking to upgrade their ERP and 48% named operational efficiency as the main driver. Efficiency comes from how much of your operation the platform carries natively and how well the people implementing it understand your business, and the licence line is a small part of that.

“Pronto has been selling ERP to Australian companies for longer than most of the people evaluating it have been working, and pretending it isn’t a serious option would cost us credibility with exactly the readers we want. If you run six shops and a warehouse in a town with patchy internet, we’ll say Pronto. If you run four entities, your finance team lives in a browser and nobody wants to own a server again, MYOB Acumatica is the shorter path.”

How to decide between MYOB Acumatica and Pronto Xi

Ask three questions. Where does your software need to run, and is cloud only a problem or a relief? Who do you want accountable when something breaks, one vendor or a partner you chose and can replace? And which of your operations is the hard one: tills, mine-site assets and process manufacturing point one way; entities, projects and a cloud-native finance team point the other. Our Odoo vs MYOB Acumatica post walks through the same style of decision framework if a third platform is still on your list, and our MYOB Acumatica services page sets out how we run an evaluation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Pronto Xi an Australian ERP?

Yes. Pronto Xi is developed by Pronto Software, an Australian company headquartered in Melbourne that has built ERP for more than 45 years and reports more than 1,500 Australian and global customers. Pronto writes, sells, implements and supports the product itself. MYOB Acumatica is the Australian and New Zealand edition of Acumatica, a US-developed platform, localised and sold by MYOB and implemented by accredited partners.

Is MYOB Acumatica cloud only, and can Pronto Xi run on-premise?

MYOB Acumatica is delivered as a cloud subscription only. Pronto Xi can be taken as SaaS through Pronto Cloud, hosted on infrastructure you own or rent, or installed on your own servers, and the customer chooses. If you have a firm data-residency policy, unreliable site connectivity or existing server investment, that difference alone can decide the shortlist.

Which is cheaper, MYOB Acumatica or Pronto Xi?

Neither vendor publishes a price list, so nobody can answer that before scoping. MYOB sells Acumatica per named user in access tiers and quotes through partners. Pronto sells Pronto Xi as a modular product with bundled support and prices it differently for SaaS, hosted and on-premise. Get two scoped quotes on the same user list and module list, taken out to five years including hosting, support and upgrades.

Who implements MYOB Acumatica and who implements Pronto Xi?

Pronto implements and supports Pronto Xi directly with its own consultants, so you get one accountable vendor but cannot change implementer later. MYOB Acumatica is implemented by accredited partners you choose, and you can move your subscription to a different partner without changing software. Which model you prefer is often the deciding factor between the two.

When would a MYOB Acumatica partner recommend Pronto Xi instead?

When the business needs on-premise or private cloud deployment, runs multi-store retail with an integrated point of sale, operates in mining or asset-heavy engineering, or wants a single vendor accountable for software, implementation and support. MYOB Acumatica tends to suit cloud-native finance-led groups with several entities, projects and a preference for choosing their own partner.
